Mayors From Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville and Mooresville Announce Transportation Task Force

For Immediate Release

Off I-77, December 14, 2007 - Jill Swain, mayor of Huntersville, joined fellow mayors from Cornelius, Davidson and Mooresville today to announce the formation of a transportation task force charged with making transportation work better for the residents of the region.

“The area mayors are asking community leaders to develop a balanced and integrated approach to addressing the transportation priorities affecting our citizens,” said Swain during the morning rush-hour commute at a Huntersville park and ride. “We’re ready to roll up our sleeves and work together to improve transportation in our communities.”

The task force will be chaired by former Davidson mayor Randall Kincaid and vice chaired by former Cornelius mayor Gary Knox. Each town has appointed one elected official and one citizen to serve on the task force. The group will meet weekly beginning January 2 and submit an initial report in April. Discussion topics include widening I-77, improving land use plans, commuter rail, connectivity, alternative funding and improving air quality.

“This is a first of its kind announcement, showing the spirit of co-operation amongst the new boards,” said Mooresville Mayor Bill Thunberg. “Many of the new administrations are just days old and coming together so quickly shows the gravitas of this issue and our desire to make substantive change.”

Joining Huntersville’s Mayor Swain and Mooresville’s Mayor Thunberg at the announcement this morning were Cornelius Mayor Jeff Tarte and Davison Mayor John Woods.
