Charlotte MSA Statistics

The Charlotte Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), also referred to as the Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord MSA, covers the larger Charlotte Metro region and includes counties with at least 25 percent of their working population commuting to work in the central county of Mecklenburg. In 2006, the US Census estimated a population of 1,462,636 in the Charlotte MSA. This indicates 10% growth over the 2000 population of 1,334,679.

In 2000, according to the US Census Bureau, the Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill MSA was the 34th largest Metropolitan Statistical Area in the United States with a combined commuting population of 1,499,293. The Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point ranked 37th and Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill was not far behind at number 41. Other North Carolina metros in the top 250 MSA's according to the 2000 Census include: Hickory-Morganton-Lenoir (120), Fayetteville (131), Wilmington (154), Asheville (157), Jacksonville (204), Rocky Mount (212) and Greenville (222).
