About

Recreation

The most obvious source of recreation for the region is Lake Norman.  However there are a wide variety of recreational activities in the area, due in large part to the commitment to parks and preserving open spaces by the three towns of Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson and Mecklenburg County.

The Town of Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department has eleven facilities that they maintain and two new parks in the planning and construction phases.  These parks are home to many amateur sporting events and youth tournaments every year and offer neighborhoods playground and team sport activities.  The Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department also works to bring new events such as the Soap Box Derby to the area.

The Town of Cornelius Parks and Recreation Department has eight park and recreation facilities and also demonstrates a strong commitment to parks and recreational opportunities.  Cornelius is also working with Mecklenburg County to build and expand the Westmoreland Athletic Complex, which will serve youth tournament events throughout most of the year. Cornelius is also home to the only County-run dog park in North Mecklenburg.

The Town of Davidson Parks and Recreation Department has twelve parks and recreation facilities, including ball fields, playgrounds and green spaces.  The town also has a dog park exclusively for Davidson residents and their registered pets.  They are also working on adding a new mountain bike trail to the natural area of Fisher Farm Park.

The Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation Department also plays a vital role in the parks of the Lake Norman area of North Mecklenburg.  The County has three parks on Lake Norman in Blythe Landing, Jetton Park and Ramsey Creek Park.  All three of these are located in Cornelius.  The County also has three other parks in Huntersville that are maintained by the Town of Huntersville’s Parks and Recreation Staff: David B. Waymer Park, Huntersville Athletic Park and North Mecklenburg Athletic Park.

The County also works with each of the three North Mecklenburg Towns in locating and purchasing land for future park development.  It also cooperates with them in the creation of greenway trails throughout the County, including the Torrence Creek Greenway in Huntersville.

The Town of Huntersville also boasts an Olympic sized 50-meter competition pool and diving facility with Huntersville Family Fitness & Aquatics (HFFA).  In addition, the HFFA offers a well rounded fitness experience with a second 25-yard warm water pool, full court gymnasium, fitness center, group exercise studio, and outdoor splash park that parents and children regularly enjoy during warmer months.
