In total, the Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord Metropolitan Statistical Area covers seven counties, six in North Carolina and one in South Carolina. The North Carolina Counties are Cabarrus, Gaston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan and Union. The lone county from South Carolina is York.

In 2000, according to the US Census Bureau, the Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill MSA was the 34th largest Metropolitan Statistical Area in the United States with a combined commuting population of 1,499,293. The Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point ranked 37th and Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill was not far behind at number 41. Other North Carolina metros in the top 250 MSA's according to the 2000 Census include: Hickory-Morganton-Lenoir (120), Fayetteville (131), Wilmington (154), Asheville (157), Jacksonville (204), Rocky Mount (212) and Greenville (222).
